Job Description

The Progressive Companies Summer Internship Program is a paid, full-time experience where classroom learning meets real-world impact. You'll dive into hands-on projects, sharpen your problem-solving and communication skills, and gain a front-row seat to the world of architecture, design, engineering, and construction. Along the way, enjoy community outings, wellness events, service-learning projects, and lunch-and-learns that fuel both your career and your curiosity.

As a Planning Intern, you will collaborate with the Urban Planning Practice Leader, Project Managers, and Planners to advance urban design and planning projects with an emphasis on housing, redevelopment, and neighborhood revitalization. You will assist in preparing development strategies, housing market analyses, pro formas, and policy recommendations that support equitable, attainable, and climate-resilient housing outcomes.

You will also contribute to master plans, zoning modernization, community engagement, and development feasibility studies, combining research, writing, mapping, and visual storytelling to help communities implement real, place-based change.

This position requires a commitment to continued learning in housing and development topics, including zoning reform, public-private partnerships, development finance, affordable housing tools, market trends, and community wealth-building models.

Responsibilities
• Conduct housing market, demographic, and spatial analyses using public and proprietary data sources
• Support development feasibility and pro forma modeling, including cost and revenue assumptions
• Research and summarize housing and development policies, incentive programs, and financing tools
• Prepare technical writing for inclusion in plans, strategies, and funding applications
• Create maps, charts, and visually rich materials for community engagement, presentations, and reports
• Assist with public and stakeholder engagement, preparing materials and attending meetings as needed
• Maintain attention to detail in proofing reports, memos, and deliverables
• Coordinate tasks and provide progress updates to Project Managers and senior staff

Qualifications
• Enrollment in a planning or planning-adjacent program such as urban planning, architecture, public policy, real estate development, or economics; completion of at least one year of coursework required
• Strong technical writing and data visualization skills
• Experience or coursework related to housing policy, real estate development, or community planning
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Teams)
• Knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS Pro
• Experience with financial modeling or pro forma tools (e.g., Excel-based development analysis) is a plus
• Demonstrated interest in equitable housing, redevelopment, and community revitalization
